MISSION
During the year
Lakeside Friends of the Animals continued its mission to improve the lives of
animals at Lakeside. We focused again on
three programs:
Assistance to Mexicans of
Limited Means (emergency care and sterilizations)
Feline Leukemia Testing
Assistance to local animal
shelters (food purchases)
ASSISTANCE TO MEXICANS OF LIMITED MEANS AND FELINE LEUKEMIA TESTING
Dog surgeries
totaled 223 and cat surgeries totaled 148.
Two hundred and
twelve (212) feline leukemia tests were performed with 21 cats testing
positive.
The number of
surgeries has increased steadily over last year as word of the availability of
assistance has spread through the Mexican community.
ASSISTANCE TO LOCAL
SHELTERS
During the year
we provided monthly assistance through the purchase of food to the following
shelters:
Anita’s Animals - $5,100 pesos
per month
Mina Perez - $1,250 pesos per
month
Nick Lampiris - $2,500 pesos per
month
Due to the
limited funds available we stopped providing support to Lakeside Spay and
Neuter/The Ranch.
TREASURER’S REPORT
The Treasurer’s report
is appended to the Annual Report.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
LFA did several
things to try to improve publicity/visibility during the year:
- We printed and distributed new
and improved cards for Mexican of Limited Means explaining our services.
- Listed LFA in several
publication directories – El Ojo del Lago, Lake Chapala Review, Ajijic News
website and a
¼ page ad in the upcoming 2011 Lakeside Directory.
Frequently appeared in El Ojo del Lago and The Reporter promoting
LFA special events.
Held a highly successful special event at Restaurant Number Four, an
“Evening in Casablanca”, which raised money and visibility.
Sold 100 bio-degradable “grocery bags” with the LFA website which
raised money and visibility.
Developed a Friends of LFA invitation list containing 160 names for
invitation to special events.
Added useful information to the LFA website, including “Guidelines
for Adopting a Dog”, an article on protecting your pets when there are
thunderstorms or fireworks, and the Law Protecting Animals of the State of
Jalisco.
Articulated “Shelter Standards” to improve care of animals in local
shelters and distributed them to shelter managers.
Worked with a local Notary to secure written confirmation from
Mexican officials that gifts to LFA can be deducted from taxes.
Began working with several local animal welfare organizations and
individuals to develop an educational program in Spanish for Mexican schools
entitled “Respero de la Vida” (Respect for Life).
Launched a “Post Life Planning Program for pets wherein people can
ensure their pets are taken care of once they are deceased.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
LFA continues to benefit from the cooperation of The Animal Clinic
of Drs. Ladron de Guevara in Riberas del Pilar with reduced prices for
emergency care and sterilization for the pets of Mexicans of Limited
Means. As well, we extend our gratitude
to Barbara Hess and Geoffrey Kaye at the Animal Shelter for providing LFA with
many services including scheduling appointments for sterilizations, doing
intakes for emergency care, handling feline leukemia testing and keeping
records of their services.
SUBMISSION
This Annual Report is respectfully submitted to the LFA Board of
Directors at its Annual Meeting on March 3, 2011.
WE
NEED YOUR ASSISTANCE
Each
year we see animals in need. Mexicans of limited means are coming
to us for help; non-for profit animal shelters such as Anita's Animals, the Animal Shelter and several other small
shelters look to us for assistance. Please help us so that we might
continue to help them. Lakeside Friends of the Animals is committed
to carrying forward with its programs thereby "Speaking for
those who cannot speak for themselves." |
